Angling Cymru is delighted to welcome a couple of new additions to its Board of Directors.
At a recent Board meeting, Andy Thompson and Andrew Bury were appointed as voluntary Chairs of the newly formed Coarse and Game Angling sub-committees, respectively, each for a term of the three years.
Both will play a vital role in shaping the future direction of these disciplines within Wales, as well providing a key link between the sub-committees and the Angling Cymru Board.
As someone who has a lifelong association and involvement with both sea and coarse angling, Andy Thompson needs little introduction.
A keen angler, he has also served as match organiser and club official – and has held all the major roles within Holyhead & District Angling Club, including secretary, treasurer and chair.
Originally a mechanical engineer, he has spent the best part of the past 20 years working as a health and safety trainer.
On being appointed to the role of Chair of the Angling Cymru Coarse Anglers sub-committee, he said: “I’m very pleased to take on this role and I now look forward to coming together and working in collaboration with clubs and member anglers of all types to take coarse angling in Wales forward and promoting the sport – in a way that hopefully suits and works better for everybody.”
Also joining the board is Andrew Bury – who has been appointed to the role of Chair of the Angling Cymru Game Anglers.
Andrew’s love of angling began as a three-year-old fishing with his father on the banks of the River Towy in 1981 – and fast forward more than 30 years, Andrew took his own three-year-old son fishing at the same spot.
Over the past decade, he has become an active committee for Cowbridge and District Angling Association – and has served as Chairman since 2015. In addition, Andrew is also treasurer of one of Wales' oldest fishing clubs – Cymdeithas Pysgota Llandeilo Angling Association cyf (1893).
He is also an active member of various habitat restoration projects.
A former semi-professional rugby player and Deputy Head Primary School Teacher, Andrew is currently CEO of IntroTeach – which is one of the largest education companies in Wales.
“I’m really excited to be taking on this role with Angling Cymru,” said Andrew.
“I now look forward to working with my fellow sub-committee members – and harnessing their skills, experience and energy – to support the achievement of the overall Welsh angling strategy.
“I am also very keen to use my links with education to get more involvement in the classroom and get more youngsters fishing.”
On the new appointments to the Angling Cymru Board, Chair Keith Warburton said: “I’m delighted to welcome Andy Thompson and Andrew Bury on to the Board.
“As we move forward into an exciting period with the development of our new angling strategy for Wales, these appointments strengthen our collective Board capability and will be key in shaping our future plans.”
